We’ve barely had time to put away the Christmas decorations and it’s already the end of January, and with it brings the first round of this year’s British Mountaineering Council Youth Climbing Series! Round 1 was held at Big Rock Climbing Centre, Milton Keynes. Twenty-two members of the Reading Climbing Centre Academy made the trip up to Big Rock, including seven of which was their first ever YCS!
It was the first time that Big Rock had held a round of YCS. The Centre itself is a good size and consists of 4 main areas; reception/coffee shop as you walk in, a bouldering area on your left, a sunken lead wall area in the middle, and a bottom rope/clip & climb area on the right. All the spectating was done from the coffee shop area to manage the 136 competitors’ entourage.
The event got underway after the competitors briefing with each of them having 3 routes and 3 blocs to attempt over the day, with points being given out depending on how high you got and how many attempts you got there in. Everything went to plan and ran smoothly in the morning with all the RCC Academy members topping their first routes and blocs. The afternoon saw the action getting hotter on the walls including two climb-offs to sort out 1st place in a couple of categories it ended well!
After the chalk dust had settled on the day, the podium presentation took place with 5 RCC Academy members securing a place on the podium in their relevant categories:
Ewan Walker 2nd Boys A
Isla Thompson 2nd Girls B
Joachim Buche 3rd Boys C
Kaia Marston 3rd Girls D
Rose Stemp 1st Girls E
Everyone from RCC seemed to enjoy themselves and the standard of climbing was high from the team so I’d like to say a big thank you and a great job to all that attended. A special mention goes to Isla, who narrowly missed out on 1st place at her first event in category B. I would also like to thank our RCC Coaches, Dan, Luke, and Heather for their help on the day.
